Ratti Galli Lake: A Hiker’s Heaven in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Region

Our travel starts from the city of Lahore, the cultural capital of Pakistan, is a bustling metropolis known for its rich history, delicious food, and vibrant nightlife. But for those looking for a change of pace, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region offers a completely different experience. With its rugged mountains, pristine lakes, and unspoiled natural beauty, Azad Jammu and Kashmir is the perfect destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

It will take seven hours to reach Muzaffarabad by road from Lahore. Once you arrive in Muzaffarabad, you can explore the city’s rich history and culture by visiting the Red Fort, the Neelum River, and the Martyrs Monument. The city also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, paragliding, and camping.

Ratti Galli is a small village located in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region of Pakistan. The village is situated at an altitude of around 7,000 feet above sea level, making it a popular destination for trekkers and hikers. The village is surrounded by lush green forests and offers spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain range.

The trek to Ratti Galli starts from the town of Chakothi, which is located about 60 kilometers from Muzaffarabad, the capital city of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The trek can take anywhere from 4-6 hours, depending on your fitness level and the trail conditions.

The trail is well-marked and offers a mix of steep inclines and flat sections. The first part of the trek is relatively easy, with gentle inclines and a well-defined trail. However, as you get closer to the village, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. The last stretch of the trail is a steep ascent that can be quite challenging, especially if you are not used to hiking at high altitudes.

The most popular way to reach Ratti Galli lake is by taking a 4×4 jeep from the city of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The journey takes around 3-4 hours and is a mix of paved and unpaved roads. The road is well-maintained and is accessible throughout the year, although during the monsoon season, the road can be muddy and slippery.

The jeep ride offers some of the most breathtaking views of the region, passing through picturesque villages, lush green valleys, and rugged mountain ranges. Along the way, you will also pass through several army check-points, which is a common sight in the region.

Once you reach the village of Ratti Galli, you will have to park your jeep and continue the rest of the journey on foot. The trek from the village to the lake takes around 30 minutes and is relatively easy, with gentle inclines and a well-defined trail.

Once you reach the village, you will be greeted by the friendly locals who will be more than happy to show you around. The village is home to around 200 people and is known for its traditional architecture and beautiful houses made of mud and stone.

One of the main attractions of Ratti Galli is the Ratti Galli Lake, which is located just a short walk from the village. The lake is a beautiful, crystal-clear body of water surrounded by towering peaks. The lake is also a popular spot for fishing and camping.

Another popular activity in Ratti Galli is paragliding. The village is located at a perfect spot for paragliding and offers spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain range. If you are an experienced paraglider, you can take off from the top of the mountain and fly over the village and the surrounding countryside.

In conclusion, Azad Jammu and Kashmir is a perfect destination for those looking for an adventure. From the rugged mountains to the pristine lakes, this region offers a wide range of activities and experiences that can be enjoyed all year round. So, if you’re looking for a change of pace from Lahore, be sure to include Azad Jammu and Kashmir in your travel itinerary.

Ratti Galli is a great destination for adventure-seekers and nature lovers. The trek to the village is challenging but rewarding, and the village itself is a beautiful, peaceful place that offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the Himalayan mountains. If you are planning a trip to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, be sure to include Ratti Galli in your adventure destination.
