The future is digital: embracing screen billboards in a paper-free world

Introduction

What is Design?

At the core of the conversation was the question, what is design? Design is more than just creating things; it's about communication, self-expression, and finding solutions to problems. Design is how we make sense of the world around us, how we interact with it, and how we contribute to shaping it. Through design, we see and make things that not only serve practical purposes but also express our values, beliefs, and aspirations.

The 17 Goals of Sustainable Design

Sustainable design aligns with the 17 goals of sustainable development outlined by the United Nations. Achieving these goals requires a concerted effort from designers and industries alike.

In the digital age, sustainable design is more important than ever. As the world faces environmental challenges, designers have a critical role in creating solutions that are both functional and eco-friendly. Understanding sustainable design practices can lead to a better, more responsible future.

The future is digital embracing screen billboards in a paper-free world.

Key Points

Defining Sustainable Design Sustainable design goes beyond aesthetics—it is about creating products and systems that minimize environmental impact. The panelists, including Mr. Ahmer Rizvi (Design Consultant) and Miss Sania Mubarak (Head of the Institute of Art and Textile Culture, CUKT), emphasized the importance of considering the full lifecycle of a product, from raw materials to disposal. Design serves as a communication tool, reflecting values and contributing to a sustainable future.

The Role of Industries. According to Mr. Ahmer Rizvi (Design Consultant) while companies like Nestlé and Tetra Pak have adopted eco-friendly packaging and materials, many industries still lag in embracing sustainable design. The discussion pointed out that designers must push for research-based, environmentally conscious approaches to reduce waste and promote recycling.

The Digital World’s Impact Digital tools reduce waste by replacing paper and traditional advertising, but challenges remain, such as digital waste and the environmental cost of technology. Still, digital marketing is a powerful tool for promoting sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

4.The Role of Students and Young Designers The panellists also explored the role of students and the younger generation in promoting sustainable design. It was noted that students today are increasingly aware of sustainability, with many focusing on projects that incorporate the principles of the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, seeking ways to minimize their environmental footprint through design The responsibility of designers as change-makers was emphasized, with the belief that young designers will play a crucial role in shaping the future.

Tips for Aspiring Designers

For those looking to get involved in sustainable design, the panellists offered some valuable tips:

● Research-based projects are key to understanding the environmental impact of design choices.

● Designers should focus on using biodegradable materials and eco-friendly printing processes.

● Reducing the use of plastic and unnecessary chemicals in design is essential.

● Awareness of sustainability in the digital world is crucial, with less reliance on traditional advertising and more focus on digital solutions that reduce waste.

Conclusion

Sustainable design is vital for our planet's future, and designers are at the forefront of this change. By adopting eco-conscious practices, we can create a more sustainable world. As future designers, we must continue to learn and innovate to ensure that our work is both beautiful and responsible.
