Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Pakistan became synonymous with excellence in sports like cricket, hockey, and squash. The national hockey team was a dominant force, winning four World Cups in 1971, 1978, 1982, and 1994.
In squash, legends like Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan brought international acclaim to Pakistan. With a combined 14 World Open titles and 17 British Open titles, they established Pakistan as an unrivaled powerhouse in the sport.
Cricket reached its zenith under Imran Khan’s captaincy in 1992 when Pakistan won the Cricket World Cup. The national team added another major victory at the ICC World Twenty20 Final at Lord’s in 2009.
In recent years, young athletes like Talha Talib have kept the flame of Pakistan’s sports legacy alive. Talib, a 22-year-old weightlifter, won a bronze medal at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championship by lifting 143kg in the snatch event in the 67kg category. Additionally, Punjab University (PU) athletes made history at the 2024 Asian Rowing Indoor Championship in Penang, Malaysia, winning 9 medals, including 5 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze. The PU rowing team, guided by Director of Sports Zubair Ahmad Butt and Coach Abdul Rehman, demonstrated the rising talent in Pakistan.
A New Era for Pakistani Athletics with Arshad Nadeem

Prioritizing rural areas is also crucial, as these regions are home to much of Pakistan’s untapped athletic talent.
Grassroots development programs are vital for nurturing the next generation of athletes. Collaborations between the public and private sectors can significantly boost the growth of sports at all levels. Corporate sponsorships, media partnerships, and private investments are valuable revenue sources for supporting athletic events and talent development.
Beyond infrastructure, fostering a national sports culture is equally important. Sports should be celebrated as a core part of Pakistan’s identity. Media campaigns, public celebrations of sporting achievements, and national sports days can help cultivate a culture that values athletics and encourages participation.
Pakistan’s Future in Athletics
Pakistan’s potential in athletics far exceeds its current achievements. With the right investments, support, and cultural emphasis, Pakistan has the ability not only to compete on the global stage but to dominate it. This would not only bring pride to the nation but also inspire future generations to pursue excellence in sports.
